The Break-Ups and the Hook-ups that gave rise to Your Students' Union

Old-School Nelson

In the beginning, Nelson's student society (Selkirk College Student Society Nelson or SCSS-N) was lonely and single. It only included the Silver King Campus.  Class reps would be elected who would then vie for executive positions. Most slots would be won by acclamation and there were very few campus events put on due to students not having the facilities.

But then a courtship between Silver King and the Tenth  Street campuses blossomed. The gift of event facilities was bestowed upon the glowing Silver King and before long the student society was hot and heavy in both campuses.

But as relationships sometimes go, the differences became too pronounced to ignore. Silver King preferred drag car racing; Tenth Street preferred art shows. In 1999, the student society split into two little units, "You stay in your corner, I'll stay in mine!" they angrily huffed.

The two separate society's were doing quite well on there own (thank-you very much), finding the smaller groups and budgets easier to cope with.

But by 2005, the 'individuality' had become too much to bear and a Nelson referendum meant that the Tenth Street and Silver King student societies were back at it again, bonded by common goals and often seen holding hands.

On the other side of the highway, was the Castlegar student society (Selkirk Student's Association or SSA) who decided three was most definitely NOT a crowd, when they approached the Nelson student society (SCSS-N) asking if the three could join in to be a stronger student voice. The Nelson student society needed one year to contemplate the complex ramifications of adding a third party....

Old-School Castlegar

In 1981 the Castlegar student society (Selkirk College Student's Society or SCSS) was considering venturing into an open relationship.

They held a referendum to join the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) that passed. The SCSS became Local 4 of the CFS, second in all of BC to join.

But sometimes open relationships sound like a better idea than they really are.

"Were you staring at her? Don't you really love ME?"

So eventually in 1991 a general meeting was held that dissolved the emotionally scarred SCSS. But they must have been doing better than they let on because behind closed doors it was 'business' as usual until the new girl walked in.

In 1992 the society let new influence reinvent them into the shiny new Selkirk Student's Association (SSA).

This new make-over must have been good because it made the Canadian Federation of Students forget their tumultuous past and in 2005 the Castlegar student society (SSA) once again became active in the Federation.

Wedded Bliss

Well, love must have been in the air in the mid 2000's because on top of the SSA-CFS union that took place, in 06-07 the Kootenay School of the Arts (KSA) in Nelson was adopted by Selkirk College as one of its own. And if that wasn't enough, for the first time in Selkirk College history, the three Nelson campuses and the Castlegar campus students' unions amalgamated as the Selkirk College Students' Union (SCSU). This big happy polygamous relationship still exists today and with a little flowers and whole lot of heart-to-hearts, it just might live happily ever after.

........Or is another shiny student union lurking in the shadowy sidelines, with freshly cut hair and a sly grin......
